Fantasporto
Fantasporto is one of the older European fantastic-film institutions, and that age still gives it a distinctive authority. Based in Porto, Portugal, the festival has long mixed horror, fantasy, and science fiction with a strong interest in international discovery, which places it closer to the classic European tradition of Sitges than to the newer American discovery festivals like Brooklyn Horror Film Festival.
Its identity has often been built on range and international openness rather than one single scene or national trend. Films such as Cronos, REC, Let the Right One In, and The Babadook fit the sort of cross-border fantastic canon Fantasporto has helped circulate: smart, exportable, and strong enough to move between cult and critical conversation.
Fantasporto matters now because it still represents continuity. In a festival landscape that often rewards novelty above memory, Porto remains a reminder that fantastic cinema has had its own international infrastructure for decades, and that infrastructure still shapes how genre travels.
