Simon Pummell
Simon Pummell’s body of work has always passionately engaged with the fantastic and science fiction. In ANIMATION: A WORLD HISTORY (2017) Giannalberto Bendazzi describes Pummell's work as “crossing boundaries of traditional animation; making films that turn on the anxiety caused by having a physical body and the need to find one’s self in a world of new technologies.” The human/animal hybrids of Pummell's first animation SECRET JOY OF FALLING ANGELS won the Grand Prix at the Oberhausen Short Film Festival, and was nominated for the Cartoon d’Or European Animated Film of the Year. His 'city symphony' of the body - the archival documentary BODYSONG - won a BAFTA and BIFA. SHOCK HEAD SOUL - his steampunk biopic of outsider artist Daniel Paul Schreber - used animation extensively to create Schreber’s psychotic visions, and was nominated for the 68th Venice Film Festival Orizzonti Prize.
