Miguel Varela

Miguel Varela (La Coruña, 1994) studied Audiovisual Communication and the Master in Film and Television at the Carlos III University. During his time at university he began writing, producing and directing short films under the label Gente Mala Films with David del Río. He began his career as a screenwriter and director with the short film ‘The Children of Allen Funt’ (2020), winner of the Cortojoven Award at the Toledo Film Festival, presented in the Brigadoon Section of the Sitges Film Festival and screened at renowned international festivals such as the Winter Film Awards International Film Festival, Wasteland Film Festival, Fictio Film Festival, Festival Internacional de Cine Fantástico y Terror de Navarra or the Sabadell Horror Film Festival. Later he would sign titles like ‘The Babyface Killing’ (2020), ‘Crimson’ (2021), and ‘The Cell’ (2021), screened at festivals like Très Court International Film Festival, Linares Festival, One Shot Terrasa City of Film, FKM Festival de Cinema Fantástico da Coruña, BaiDeFest Roses, Marató De Cinema Fantàstic I De Terror De Sants, Oakland International Film Festival, Brain Film Festival, or the Semana de Cine de Mula. Broadly speaking, the works of this filmmaker belong mostly to the fantastic, horror or thriller genre. His stories show asphyxiating, dystopian or absurd spaces to reflect the vital anguish of his characters and, in many cases, a social criticism. -- Miguel Varela (La Coruña, 1994) estudió Comunicación Audiovisual y el Máster en Cine y Televisión en la Universidad Carlos III. Durante su etapa universitaria comenzó a escribir, producir y dirigir cortometrajes bajo el sello Gente Mala Films junto a David del Río. Arrancó su andadura como guionista y director con el cortometraje Los Hijos de Allen Funt (2020) ganador del Premio Cortojoven en el Festival de Toledo, presentado en la Sección Brigadoon del Festival de Sitges y proyectado en Festivales Internacionales de renombre como el Winter Film Awards International Film Festival, Wasteland Film Festival, Fictio Film Festival, Festival Internacional de Cine Fantástico y Terror de Navarra o el Festival de Cine de Terror de Sabadell. Después firmaría títulos como La matanza del Babyface (2020), Carmesí (2021), y La Celda (2021), proyectados en festivales como Très Court International Film Festival, Festival de Linares, One Shot Terrasa City of Film, FKM Festival de Cinema Fantástico da Coruña, BaiDeFest Roses, Marató De Cinema Fantàstic I De Terror De Sants, Oakland International Film Festival, Brain Film Festival, o la Semana de Cine de Mula. A grandes rasgos, las obras de este cineasta pertenecen en su mayoría al género fantástico, terror o thriller. Sus historias muestran espacios asfixiantes, distópicos o absurdos para reflejar la angustia vital de sus personajes y, en muchos casos, una crítica social.
