Mdhamiri á Nkemi - director portrait

Mdhamiri á Nkemi

BAFTA Breakthrough and Screen Star of Tomorrow, Mdhamiri á Nkemi is a filmmaker graduated from the National Film and Television School, where he was awarded the year’s Most Promising Student Award. As an editor, he has been involved in films that have been BAFTA nominated and Academy long listed, BIFA winning (The Last Tree, FEMME) and multi-awarded (Blue Story, The Devil’s Harmony, Facing It), working alongside filmmakers such as Ridley Scott, Kevin Macdonald, and debbie tucker green. Projects he has edited have travelled festivals including as Sundance, Berlinale, TiFF, SXSW, London Film Festival, and many others. As a director, he has multiple feature projects in development with partners including the BFI, and has just directed the ambitious short 'original skin' with BBC Film. He’s interested in films with unconventional forms of storytelling, supporting distinctive stories. His early shorts were all about using science fiction for its original purpose of unpicking the lock boxes of the human mind - either through high concept psychodrama ('I know how you feel' - what if you could literally feel other people's emotions?), or the interactions around family and relationships ('Cuttings', 'Elle & Naomi'). While studying at NFTS he directed a Kodak commercial which picked up two awards at the Kodak Nahemi Student Commercials Awards in 2018. Having cut over 1000s of hours of rushes from a multitude of other directors, and studied the range of ways you can use use film to express how you see the world, he's very excited to take these experiences and make films that are fresh and exciting, stylistic and bold, but fundamentally human.
